FInancial Controller - Portco
Position Summary

The Business Unit Controller is responsible for the day-to-day accounting, local financial reporting, and monthly close process for a business unit within the broader company. This role owns the local accounting function, manages the accounting team, and ensures accurate reporting of AR, AP, cash, inventory, and general ledger activity.

The Controller will work closely with local operations and corporate finance to ensure timely closes, accurate financial reporting, strong controls, and consistent accounting processes.

Key Responsibilities
Monthly Close and Reporting

• Own the monthly close process for the business unit.
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements, account reconciliations, and close schedules.
• Review balance sheet accounts and ensure support is complete and accurate.
• Analyze results and explain key variances to local leadership and corporate finance.
• Submit required reporting packages to corporate on time.
  

Day-to-Day Accounting Operations

• Oversee daily accounting activity, including AP, AR, billing, cash receipts, disbursements, and general ledger entries.
• Ensure transactions are recorded accurately and timely.
• Maintain proper review and approval processes.
• Ensure local accounting practices align with company policies.
  

Accounts Receivable and Cash

• Manage customer billing, cash application, collections, and AR aging.
• Review past due balances and work with operations or sales to resolve collection issues.
• Oversee bank reconciliations and cash reporting.
• Ensure cash activity is properly recorded and reconciled.

Accounts Payable and Vendors

• Manage vendor invoice processing, approvals, coding, and payment activity.
• Review AP aging and ensure vendor issues are resolved timely.
• Ensure invoices are properly supported and approved.
• Monitor unusual or unsupported spending activity.
  

Inventory and Balance Sheet Controls

• Oversee inventory accounting, including receipts, adjustments, reconciliations, and reserves.
• Work with operations to support accurate inventory reporting.
• Review inventory adjustments and ensure proper documentation.
• Maintain strong controls over cash, AR, AP, inventory, and other balance sheet accounts.
  

Team Leadership

• Manage the local accounting team, including AP, AR, billing, and other accounting support roles.
• Assign responsibilities and hold the team accountable for recurring tasks.
• Train and develop team members.
• Promote accuracy, timeliness, accountability, and process improvement.
  

Corporate Finance Support

• Serve as the main accounting contact for the business unit.
• Support corporate finance with reporting, audit requests, close deadlines, and policy implementation.
• Help integrate the business unit into broader company reporting and control processes.
• Provide practical financial support to local leadership while maintaining alignment with corporate requirements.
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• Prior Controller, Accounting Manager, or Senior Accountant experience preferred.
• Experience with monthly close, financial reporting, AP, AR, cash reconciliations, inventory, and balance sheet review.
• Experience managing accounting staff preferred.
• Strong Excel and accounting system skills.
• Ability to be hands-on while also managing deadlines and communicating with leadership.

Reporting Structure

• The Business Unit Controller will report to corporate finance or the appropriate business unit finance leader and will work closely with local operations leadership.
