Financial Accountant – Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC)

Our growing design and construction-focused organization is seeking a Financial Accountant to join our finance team. This individual will play a key role in supporting accounting operations, cash management, budgeting, and financial reporting across a multi-office professional services environment. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with experience supporting architecture, engineering, construction, or project-based consulting organizations.

This position works closely with leadership, project managers, and operational teams to provide financial insights that support business performance, project profitability, and long-term strategic growth.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA is a plus
• Prior experience within architecture, engineering, construction, environmental consulting, or project-based professional services organizations required
• Strong understanding of project accounting, financial reporting, and cash flow management
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modeling and analysis
• Experience with ERP systems commonly used within the AEC industry preferred
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Project Finance

• Prepare and review monthly journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
• Maintain accuracy of general ledger activity and ensure transactions are properly classified across departments and projects
• Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
• Partner with project managers and department leaders to monitor project financial performance, utilization, and profitability
• Assist with revenue recognition and project accounting activities for ongoing engagements
• Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and consultants during annual compliance and reporting processes
• Provide backup support for payroll, accounts payable, and other accounting functions as needed

Treasury & Cash Management

• Develop and maintain short- and long-term cash flow forecasts
• Monitor working capital requirements and support liquidity planning
• Reconcile operating and project-related bank accounts
• Assist leadership with banking relationships, credit facilities, and financing activities
• Monitor project billing and collections to optimize cash flow performance

Financial Planning & Reporting

• Support development of annual operating budgets and departmental forecasts
• Prepare monthly financial statements, management reports, and variance analyses
• Deliver meaningful insights related to project performance, overhead management, labor utilization, and profitability
• Assist with strategic initiatives including office expansions, lease evaluations, capital expenditures, and operational improvement projects
• Develop ad hoc analyses and executive reporting to support business decision-making
