Summary

The Energy Maintenance Technician Controls Technician plays a key role in supporting the safe and reliable operation of a BSL‑2 research facility. This position is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting HVAC systems, BAS field devices, laboratory airflow controls, and refrigerant‑based equipment. The technician ensures all environmental systems operate efficiently, meet regulatory requirements, and provide stable conditions essential for research activities.

Job Duties

  • HVAC & Mechanical Systems Maintain and troubleshoot: Air handling units VAV terminal boxes Reheat coils Exhaust systems supporting laboratory spaces Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC systems serving research labs and support areas Diagnoses airflow, temperature, and pressurization issues affecting lab containment
  • BAS & Controls Maintain BAS terminal devices, including: Sensors Actuators Controllers Replaces failed BAS controllers and verify proper operation Assists with point-to-point verification and functional testing Works with Facilities and Engineering staff to identify control issues impacting lab safety
  • Refrigeration & EPA Compliance Services refrigerant-based equipment including: Freezers Refrigerators HVAC systems Recovers, handle, and dispose of refrigerants in compliance with EPA regulations Maintains accurate refrigerant usage and recovery documentation
  • Compliance & Safety Support BSL-2 facility requirements related to: Environmental control Equipment reliability Safety systems Follows lockout/tagout, confined space, and biosafety procedures Coordinates work with EHS and lab personnel as required
  • Documentation Completes CMMS work orders with clear troubleshooting notes Assists in identifying aging or high-risk equipment for capital planning

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BAS experience (Schneider, Siemens, JCI, etc.).
  • Experience in research, healthcare, or regulated facilities.
  • Experience troubleshooting at the terminal device level.
