LHH is assisting our Louisville-based construction client in their search for a Director of Finance & Accounting to serve as the company’s senior financial leader and strategic partner to their Controller and ownership. This role will provide proactive financial insight, and support continued growth and operational efficiency across multiple unionized construction entities. The ideal candidate will bring strong construction accounting experience, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to work alongside existing leadership to make a significant impact.

Job Description

  • Lead annual budgeting, rolling forecast, and long‑range planning processes
  • Develop detailed financial models to support strategic initiatives, capital investments, pricing decisions, and growth opportunities
  • Own monthly and quarterly financial performance analysis, including variance analysis vs. budget, forecast, and prior periods
  • Ensure compliance with construction accounting standards and best practices
  • Partner with external CPA firm on year‑end tax preparation and planning
  • Proactively identify potential tax incentives, credits, and deductions
  • Leverage ComputerEase (primary ERP) and QuickBooks where applicable
  • Improve processes without disrupting culture—introducing structure with a “soft approach”
  • Support scalable systems as the business continues to grow

Requirements

  • Significant experience in construction accounting (mechanical, electrical, HVAC strongly preferred)
  • CPA strongly preferred (flexible based on experience)
  • Experience with union environments and audits (can be learned if construction background is strong)
  • Background in small‑to‑mid‑sized construction organizations rather than large, highly siloed corporations
  • Strong understanding of job costing, WIP, and multi‑entity structures
  • Hands‑on leader comfortable working in a growing, entrepreneurial environment
  • Lead with humility, emotional intelligence, and respect for a long‑tenured workforce
  • Collaborate closely with Controller as a true partner
