The Kansas City District is seeking a Deputy Project Director over Procurement and Design to support the development and administration of upcoming Design‑Build projects within the Alternative Project Delivery group. These projects will range from major corridor improvements to bundled bridge or safety packages and will follow the District’s long-term plan for maintaining a consistent Design‑Build pipeline.
The Deputy Project Director will assist in the procurement, design, and administration of Design‑Build contracts. Design‑Build delivery requires strong coordination, effective risk allocation, and cross‑functional team leadership. The Deputy Project Director will contribute to building and sustaining a dedicated Alternative Project Delivery team, support preparation of project documentation, provide technical expertise, coordinate with subject‑matter experts, and help resolve issues throughout project development and execution. They will support the Project Director and may oversee staff assigned to the MoDOT project team, as well as activities of the Owner‑Engineer consultant.
This position plays a central role in MoDOT’s long‑term strategy to build a stable, experienced Design‑Build team with the ability to deliver consecutive projects efficiently. The Deputy Project Director is expected to contribute to a culture of innovation, safety, accountability, and collaboration while helping grow future leaders within the district.
A Day In The Life
- Communicate clearly through written, personal, and public presentations.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships across MoDOT and consultants.
- Guide procurement document development and environmental coordination.
- Manage RFQ/RFP processes, scoring activities, and contractor interactions.
- Coordinate plan submittals, comments, and approval workflows.
- Support Construction team with high‑level oversight during overlap periods.
- Maintain confidentiality of procurement and design materials.
- Manage owner‑consultant performance, expectations, and deliverables.
- Encourage innovation while balancing project risk.
- Develop Highway Designers and support cross‑training opportunities.
- Contribute to design‑build project pipeline planning and evaluation.
- Support budgeting, equipment needs, and workspace readiness.
- Document decisions, risks, and key project actions accurately.
- Uphold MoDOT values of safety, accountability, respect, inclusion, and innovation.
The best candidate for the position will be selected based on the minimum requirements and the desired qualities listed above.
According to the project needs, the Project Team, led by the Project Director, may increase incrementally beyond the initial Project Team.
What You'll Need For Success
- Bachelor's Degree: Civil Engineering
- Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri.
- Six years of progressive experience in engineering positions, including demonstrated ability to manage teams, multiple projects, and focus on several functional areas of engineering.
