Job Summary

University of Utah Human Resource Management (UHRM) is committed to customer service, efficiency, and ensuring University leaders have the capacity to focus on the business and strategies of their colleges, departments, or units. The Human Resources Associate Director is the primary point of contact for assigned university business units to provide Human Resources guidance and services which include but are not limited to workforce planning, talent acquisition, performance management, Human Resources compliance, onboarding and off-boarding, and employee relations/liability management.

The Human Resources Associate Director supports assigned business unit or region by promoting, communicating, and implementing human resource strategies and initiatives and builds and maintains instrumental business relationships. Advises customers regarding University policies and Federal and Utah laws. Partners with university leadership on business and people initiatives; driving improvement and engagement activities, assisting with the alignment of organizational initiatives, and implementing employment strategies.

The HR Associate Director is required to work on campus at least twice per week, or more often depending on needs of their customers. They may have the ability to telework remotely for a portion of each week. The incumbent will be responsible for providing space, telephone, printing, networking and/or internet capabilities at the telecommute location and sign the University of Utah Telecommuting Agreement.

The HR Associate Director leads a Human Resources team that may include Employee Relations Specialists and/or Human Resources Generalists. As a member of the management team in Human Resource Management, work with Human Resources executive and administrative leadership to implement the human resource strategies for the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets existing policies and contributes to the development, implementation, and administration of new HR policies/procedures to effectively administer and improve HR programs, processes, and training; ensures compliance with HR policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert to team members and customers in addressing and resolving HR issues; remains current on HR advancements to improve HR administration.
  • Ensures customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing appropriate follow-through.
  • Ensures competency of staff, determines departmental training needs, develops and presents educational programs and training as needed, mentors, coaches and oversees ongoing staff performance management.
  • Markets and promotes new and existing programs and services to internal and external customers.
  • Participates in university-wide committees to establish customer service and administrative plans and policies.
  • Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

Directly related work experience may include:

  • Demonstrated understanding of human resource principles, practices, and procedures with a thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team, in a high volume, fast-paced HR environment

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Senior Manager, HR Business Partner Management: Functions autonomously with very limited guidance from Senior HR Director. Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 8 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience.

SPHR and/or SHRM-CP certified, or complete within 1 year of hire.

Anticipated pay range: $75,000-$80,000

Associate Director, HR Business Partner Management: Functions autonomously and acts as a resource to other HR Business Partner Managers. Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 10 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 8 years of directly related work experience.

SPHR and/or SHRM-CP certified, or complete within 1 year of hire.

Anticipated pay range: $76,000-$87,000

Preferences

Masters degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related area may be preferred.
